Are Fibregass columns Structural and Load Bearing?
Yes, the Fibreglass columns are all load bearing on their own and do not require any supports to be installed inside before installation. The load bearing capacity will depend on the diameter or width of the individual column.
PVC Columns are not load bearing on their own and will require steel or wood supports to be installed. The PVC Columns will wrap around the structural support.
What materials are best for new porch columns in the GTA climate?
- Fibreglass Columns – Low maintenance, will not rot, water proof, structural.
- PVC Column Wraps – Great for covering structural posts, water proof, resistant to cracking and insects.
Most common reason columns need replacement in Toronto GTA
In the GTA, porch columns often deteriorate due to weather exposure, moisture damage, and aging wood. Cracks, rot, or leaning columns are clear signs that replacement is needed for both safety and curb appeal.
What type of paint is recommend for Fibreglass and PVC?
When painting Fibreglass Columns or PVC Column Wraps, we recommend using a 100% Acrylic Exterior Paint. Make sure it is meant to be used on Aluminum or Vinyl Siding as the Fibreglass and PVC is non porous and any other type of paint may not adhere properly. How much does column replacement cost in Toronto & the GTA?
Costs vary depending on material and design. On average:
- PVC column wraps: $500 – $1100 per column including installation
- Fibreglass columns: $500 – $950 per column including installation
Note: reinstallation of railings, concrete work, additional wood structure, painting will all add to the price of the installation.
Do I need a building permit for column replacement in Toronto?
In most cases, replacing existing columns with the same size/style does not require a building permit. However, if structural changes are made (such as resizing or adding load-bearing elements), a permit may be required. Always check with your local municipality.
Can I just have the Column Bases Replaced?
Bases on wood columns can't be replaced without complete removal and reinstallation of the existing wood column. With this in mind, you would be better off spending a few more dollars and replace your columns with a permanent solution. Wood and Fiberglass Column bases are not interchangeable, they are built differently and are installed differently. We will not change the bases out and do not provide bases alone.
